Economic Journal - Monday, 5/18/2015

(As of 7:05 am PST)

It’s a quiet start for stocks this morning with US indexes trading flat after Friday’s session saw the S&P500 hit a record high of 2,122.73. Comments from Chicago Fed President Charles Evans early Monday kicked things off as the Federal Reserve member reiterated his stance that the central bank should hold off on raising rates until early 2016. Later in the week, markets will hear from the Federal Open Market Committee as minutes from the FOMC’s April meeting are released Wednesday. Data is light today and earnings season is winding down, leaving investors struggling to find direction in early trading. International markets were mixed on this unusually quiet Monday. Oil prices are inching higher while gold is off slightly. Interest rates and the US dollar are up. Expect a quiet session Monday, with activity picking up as we approach the FOMC release on Wednesday.
