Can the stock market break out of its extended slump? I think it can, at least for the day. Economic data is solid. Although international tensions persist, they seem less threatening in light of current developments. Positive economic news from China also might add to investor optimism. Profit reports are mixed, but do seem to be leaning to the plus side. US productivity was up and above expectations after a deep weather related fall in the 1st Quarter. Markets have started out mixed and tentative, but positive underlying strength signs might bring buyers back as the day wears on. Gold is down a small amount after yesterday's big gain and oil is up, but only slightly.
